THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING A MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE

When pupils learn a foreign language, they learn about the building blocks and structure of language itself.  They explore the similarities and differences between the foreign language they are learning and English (or their native language) and they learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways.  Pupils’ listening, reading and memory skills improve and their speaking and writing become more accurate.  These are essential skills needed for future success in both education and employment.

Not only is proficiency in languages vital to the future economic well-being of this country, but through the study of a foreign language, pupils understand and appreciate different countries, cultures, people and communities.  As they do so, they begin to think of themselves as citizens of the world as well as of the United Kingdom.

“All pupils study French from Year 5 to Year 8. In Year 8, pupils are given the experience of learning a second language. This year that is German and Spanish on a rotation.”
